His investigations take the reader into the civilian and the uniform world in America and England, but also Germany, Japan and Russia with some info about Australia and Paris, if not all of occupied France. That is the major combatants get the majority of the coverage with very little said about most of the invaded countries. Every World War II Army faced the fact that the troop were going to find or make opportunities for sex. All of them had to develop policies that balances national morality against the spread of venereal diseases from illegal or under regulated prostitution.

Here again Costello may have been missing some information or lacking good numbers on the prevalence of the problem. He has little to say about, for example female Russian soldiers and forced sexual contact. Recent events make it clear that American male soldiers are not always protective of females in uniform.

With, if not anyone else, certainly with someone else. Also clear was that women in many of the destroyed an defeated countries quickly learned that a they could always trade what was uniquely theirs for the foodstuffs and related means of survival by means of what was then called, and rarely approved of fraternization.

From the point of view of the occupying forces this trade was not entirely one sided as for them there very little in end of the war occupation to relieve their boredom, isolation and homesickness. Love, Sex and War is not just about cohabitation. He investigates several sides of the issues faced by would be Rosie the Riveters.

Even where and when companies realized that they could not make war time production schedules without women, unions were slow to make them feel welcome.

Deliberate efforts were made by management and unions to keep the women from the higher paying jobs. Likewise there were women who were hesitant and resistant to take on jobs either in production or in uniform. In England the need for farm workers was such that there would ultimately be a draft for women requiring them to choose between factories, farm or uniform.

Germany was almost uniquely slow to mobilize women for uniformed or factory service. Speaking of women in Uniform, Costello makes several assertions that among the women, there was a relatively open attitude toward those females who preferred their own sex. In both situation there were exceptions and how convincing these arguments are for the reader to decide.

Love, War and Sex is something of a niche topic in the world of military history. It is worth the read. Conventional wisdom is that these were the product of the Vet Nan war or at least had little real momentum until the s. Costello make a compelling case that stating dates were back in the time of The Best Generation. Aug 25, Mark Horejsi rated it really liked it. This is slightly different that some of the books I've reviewed before.

I am a student of history, however, and this book lurks somewhere between popular history and scholarly history. It is an older book, but well-researched and I enjoyed it a great deal. The book touches on a number of topics. Most people probably know that the first world war, and later the second, were part of a long process in which women gained equality with men. In the first world war, they entered factories and took over jobs to release men for the armies.

In the second world war, this occurred on a much increased rate, and they also took over increasing numbers of what were considered to be male jobs, work in shipyards and munitions factories. However, women also took part in the war in other, more direct ways. Women in the Anglo-American armies manned searchlight batteries, drivers, ammunition inspectors and more. They served as mechanics, nurses, and flew aircraft in non-combat functions.

Love, Sex and War gets into the very male-dominated politics that went on behind the decisions to mobilize women for military service and production, the discrimination they faced while there. Most of Love, Sex and War, however, is about the relations between men and women or occasionally men and men , such as war brides, venereal disease and prostitution, the relations troops had with women in occupied zones, and more.

It also touches on the politics of contraception, sexual propaganda, "sexpionage," and the various moral panics that occurred during the war. Finally, the book explores how the war-time sexual dynamic laid the roots for the sexual revolution. This was a good book. The history of sex and gender relations doesn't often get told, although it's a fascinating topic. This book was published in , so you would have to get a used copy off amazon or something similar to read it, but I recommend it if war history or social history is your thing.

It is by no means an exhaustive study, and I would be interested to read a book discussing similar topics in the Soviet Union, Asia and Europe, and my only complaint would be that there's no room in the book to do so. Wars change the cultural milieu. This book covers the issue of sex both as a gender and as an act. It covers the efforts to keep women from actively participating in the war effort as members of the armed services or workers in industrial plants to encouraging them to do their part when reality hits the patriarchy, as long as they are needed, then shunting them aside. The idea of finding a wife and setting down was "eight million miles off. And Simon knew the unwritten "rules" well: There were, he said, two kinds of girls - the ones who were sure to be virgins when they got married and the "other" kind of girls you pursued when you wanted to have sex.

He met a gal in the spring of whom he eventually married after the war. Though he'd been sexually active since the age of sixteen, he went "very slowly and carefully" with his future bride and never attempted to compromise her virginity.

However, during intensive naval training in Chicago, Simon was fixed up with a woman to "weekend" with. She was a "gorgeous gal" who loved to drink and party. If Simon didn't have duty, he could leave the naval base at noon on Saturday until 7 p. Sunday night. My dad was a big deal in the National Jewelers' Association that always held its conventions there, so I could always get a room, usually a suite.

I had good weekends. Dorothy Oberman not her real name never felt she was that kind of woman. A tomboy nicknamed "The Tiger Woman" as a kid, Oberman was a virgin when she left home at age twenty-one to work as a secretary in Washington, D.
